23rd November 2008 - Feast of Christ the King

The current liturgical year closes this week as we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. When we think of Kings, we usually think of the following Fine Robes, Palaces, servants, wealth, and so on. Yet Christ had none of the above. The Magi from the East came in search of the Infant King and they found him not in a palace but lying shivering in straw, and still they worshipped him as their king. That baby when he grew up would one day be dressed in a purple robe and a crown placed on his head. However, the robe was to be a form of mockery and the crown would be a crown of thorns.

People today more than ever are in search of meaning in their lives. You will hear people saying that they are spiritual, but not religious. As the numbers attending the churches have diminished, there has been an explosion in new age Sects of one type or another. Yet the search for true authentic faith continues. The gospel today is very down to earth, it reminds us that God often remains hidden and disguised in the features of his brothers and sisters. Therefore, what we do and say to one another we are really saying and doing to God. People will often look for God in the extraordinary and unusual and often will pass him by without recognising him. God's greatest disguise is when he comes to us in Holy Communion, in the small fragile host we believe that the maker of heaven and earth lives. He truly is the king of kings and the Lord of Lords.

Over the next few weeks, we and many others across the globe will be involved in the great preparations for Christmas. Next Sunday begins the Season of Advent, a time of waiting for the Lord. May we allow our eyes to really see the true meaning of this time and may our hearts be as open to receive the chid of Christmas as Mary's was. Amen.
