Last November the world witnessed history being made, a black man was elected as President of the United States. Only a few weeks ago his Presidency began with much fanfare and indeed hope and optimism. However already people are talking down the expectations that have followed him. You hear it said often that he is not another Saviour, and he won't be able to do all he may want to do as the constraints of his office begin to encircle him. We all wish him well and pray that even some of his promises may be fulfilled.
In the Gospel today we see the only Saviour going to the Synagogue and people being very impressed with what he had to say, even the unclean spirits know who he is. And despite his reputation spreading everywhere we know that the clouds of unbelief and anger were already beginning to loom on the horizon. We need to remember that the Jewish People had waited a long time for the Messiah and had ideas of what he was going to be like. But God's ways are not our ways. He came and many of his own turned away from him because of some of the home truths he spoke to them. People today talk about half empty churches, about how faith and religion is dying; some think the Church needs to come into the Twenty First Century with many of its teachings. Yet even when the Son of God walked this planet not all agreed with what he had to say, that opposition would gather and eventually he was to die outside the walls of the Holy City. The question for us believers today is who do we say that Jesus Christ is, do we have the interest and the courage to deepen our faith, or are we just content to accept or reject matters of faith and morals without even attempting to find out why the Church teaches as she does?
The times we live in call above all for credible witnesses of gospel values. The Disciples of Christ of the Twenty First Century need to provide hope to a tired and broken society especially in these days of economic recession. We do that above all by witnessing to our faith in Jesus, the Holy One of God. Amen.
